As Far As You Can See (2)

Genesis 13:14-18 KJV
14 And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
15 for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever
16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.

In the first part of these lessons, we discussed the matter of separation. It was after Lot had separated from Abraham that God gave him the charge we are now considering. We stated in that discourse the need of a life of separation if we will want to go far with God – separation from sin and carnality, separation to a life of prayer and also to the study and practice of God’s Word. Today, let us discuss what the Lord told Abraham.

Genesis 13:14 KJV
14 And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

The Lord began by telling Abraham to “lift up now thine eyes, and look”. God was about to show him something, but Abraham had to get into the right position. He had to lift up his eyes and begin to see things from God’s perspective. There is God’s way of seeing things and man’s way. Man’s way is the way of sight; God’s way is the faith way. Things may be tough and difficult now, you may be hemmed around on every side, and practically, it may seem like you are losing out. What are you to do? Lift up now thine eyes. Correct your position. Change your focus. Lift up your eyes from the distress and seeming impossibilities around you. Lift up your eyes from the troubles that face you. Lift up your eyes and fix them on Jesus! (Heb. 12:2). Fix them on His Word (Pro 4:20-22). Fix them on His power! Fix them on His mercy. Stop focusing on what the devil is doing, the reports of the doctor and financial experts and what the media outlets are dishing out. Stop looking at what your physical senses tell you in contradiction to what God’s Word says. From the natural, things may look so bad, but, Praise God, we are not limited to what our senses tell us. We can and we should lift up your eyes to God’s Word and find out what provisions He has for us.

Luke 21:26-28 KJV
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

We are in the last days. The Master will soon return. The signs of His coming are all around us. We should be glad that Jesus is coming again, but some people wouldn’t and aren’t. The Bible tells us that men’s hearts will fail them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth. We are already seeing those things. Many hearts are beginning to fail for fear. Economies are going into recession and crumbling, health institutions are collapsing by the day, deaths are happening all around, men’s hearts are beginning to fail them for fear; yet these are just the beginning of woes. What are we to do? Yield to fear? No! Drop our heads down in resignation to fate? A thousand times “No!”. The Lord Jesus said, “look up, and lift up your heads”. Hallelujah! We are not to look down at what is coming on the earth or the things happening around us. We are to lift up our heads and look up. Redemption is nigh! Hallelujah! Our spirits have been redeemed, but there is coming a redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:23). Hallelujah! The sufferings of this present time are not worthy, glory to God, to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom 8:18). This present discomfort, these present afflictions, are but for a moment and they are working for us a far more, not just more, but far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Cor 4:17). Friend, there is a glory waiting to be revealed in us. Since we have this knowledge, we refuse to be discouraged. We may be troubled now, but we are not distressed. Things may look so perplexing right now, but we refuse to be driven to despair. We are not forsaken. We cannot be destroyed. We refuse to be cowed. We refuse to be broken. We have the victory! Our heads are lifted up. Jesus is coming! and He is coming for us! Hallelujah! Men’s hearts may fail them, but we refuse to be shaken! Our hearts are fixed. Our gaze is sure! We know whom we have believed. We have put our faith in Jesus. One day, the very clouds above us will part ways, and the Lord Jesus will stand right in the skies. The dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive will be caught up together with them in the air and we will ever be with the Lord. Oh, saint of God, lift up your head and look up. Let not your heart be troubled. You have the victory. The spoils of His victory, they belong to you! They are yours! Glory to God! Lift up your head and look up.

John 4:35 KJV
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

Yes, Jesus is coming for us, but let us not be selfish. We have His command to “lift up [our] eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest”. There is a harvest of souls to be reaped. The world needs to be evangelized. The end of this world is tied to the gospel being preached to every people group in the world (Matthew 24:14). It’s time to take our eyes off ourselves and fix them on the fields, on a lost and perishing world, to tell them the good news of salvation that Jesus has brought. It’s time we reintroduced to the front burner in our churches and circles this matter of the harvest. Never a time in the history of the world, have we these vast opportunities to reach the lost. Today, with the touch of a button, we can reach a lot of people around the world that the apostles of old could only have dreamt of. May we lift up our eyes and look, like God told Abraham. May we lift up our eyes and see a dying world, in need of the good news. May we lift up our eyes and see continents filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. May we lift up now our eyes and look, the fields are white, ready for the harvest.
